Kjartan Vibe Fersum is a physiotherapist specializing in musculoskeletal disorders and a researcher. He currently combines clinical work at a private practice in Bergen, Norway, three days a week with his role as an Associate Professor at the University of Bergen.
His research interests focus on the diagnosis and management of musculoskeletal pain disorders. The title of his PhD thesis was “The Classification and Treatment of Patients with Chronic Non-Specific Low Back Pain,” in which the Cognitive Functional Therapy (CFT) approach formed the core framework. Fersum was the principal investigator of the first randomized controlled trial (RCT) on CFT, designed to evaluate the effectiveness of the intervention compared with manual therapy and exercise for persistent low back pain. The study was published in The European Journal of Pain in 2013.
He is also part of an international collaborative group (Evoolve Pain Academy), whose aim is to translate the latest research on Cognitive Functional Therapy and disseminate this knowledge to both the general public and healthcare professionals.
He is currently involved in developing research for another randomized controlled trial (the FaKTa Project) to evaluate CFT compared with pain neuroscience education and exercise in individuals with chronic low back pain, particularly among older adults receiving care in nursing homes or through home-based care services.
